Triangular Wire vs Shaped Wire: How to Choose | ERQI WIRE

Triangular wire is one shaped wire. Here is where each fits, and how to pick without over-specifying the cross-section.

"Triangular wire" and "shaped wire" get used like they are different categories. They are not — triangular wire is simply one member of the shaped-wire family, along with flat, square, half-round, trapezoidal and fully custom sections.

So the real question is not triangular versus shaped. It is: do you need the triangular section, or just a non-round section?

Pick triangular wire when the job is a slot

Screens, filters, sieves — anywhere a particle has to fall through and not bridge. The point-up triangle is doing work you cannot get from a flat or square edge.

Pick another shaped wire when the job is fit, carry or seal

  • Flat wire for springs, frames and contact faces that need a defined width and height.
  • Square wire for the same, where the corner gives location in an assembly.
  • Half-round / trapezoidal for trim, guides and seats where one flat side has to sit against something.
  • Fully custom (T-bar, J-channel, asymmetric) when nothing standard matches the drawing.

The trap we see most is over-specifying. A buyer will ask for a custom profile when a standard triangular or flat wire would do the same job for a third of the tooling cost and lead time. Before we cut a die, we usually ask: what does the cross-section actually have to do? If the answer is "make a slot," triangular wire; if it is "sit in a groove and conduct," probably square or flat.

If you are not sure which section your part needs, send the function and the drawing — we will tell you whether a standard shaped wire covers it or whether a custom section is worth the setup. Either way you avoid paying for geometry you don't need.
