Metal Bar & Wire and Shaped Wire: An Overview

What Are Metal Bar & Wire?

Metal bar and wire are among the most fundamental semi-finished metal products. Rebar, mesh, cable and fasteners all start from them. Wire is typically made from hot-rolled wire rod (coil) or hot-rolled bar, then processed through drawing, rolling and heat treatment into its final form. Most commodity wire is round in cross-section and used as a structural material—for example in rope and mesh.

Why Shaped Wire (Profile Wire)?

Unlike the familiar round wire, shaped wire—also called profile wire or special-section wire—has a non-circular cross-section made to order. Oval, square, rectangular, triangular, trapezoidal, half-round, crescent, Z and even periodically varying sections are all possible. The reason it keeps gaining ground is straightforward: downstream parts want a near-net shape and less scrap.

Standards for Special Sections

China adopted cold drawing for simple special sections early and issued national and industry standards to match. One widely used reference is "Cold-Drawn Special Sections" (YB/T 5346—2006), which covers dimensions, shape, technical requirements, test methods, inspection, packaging, marking and certification for high-quality carbon and alloy structural steels above 30 mm² in cross-section. It groups special sections by symmetry into three classes: axisymmetric (ZD), centrally symmetric (XD) and asymmetric (FD).

How Shaped Wire Is Made — and Why Buyers Choose It

Shaped wire is mainly produced by shape rolling, cold drawing (especially roller-die drawing and Turks-head forming) and combined roll-drawing. Its biggest advantage is near-net-shape: instead of buying round wire and machining the profile away, the customer receives the finished cross-section straight from the line—less machining, higher material yield, better dimensional accuracy and lower cost.

That is also why shaped wire volume has climbed quickly. Parts such as automotive weatherstrip reinforcement, medical guide wires, textile reeds and wedge wire screens have moved from "round wire plus lathe" to buying the profiled wire directly. The process and equipment are now mature, and cross-sections can largely be made to drawing.

How Shaped Wire Is Classified

Shaped wire can be grouped in several ways.

(1) By material

  • Ferrous wire: low-, medium- and high-carbon steel and alloy steel wire
  • Non-ferrous wire: copper, aluminum, magnesium, titanium and their alloys
  • Precious-metal wire: gold, silver and zirconium

(2) By cross-section

The most common wire is round, but special sections include:

  • Double-axis symmetric: oval, square and rectangular wire
  • Single-axis symmetric: crescent, triangular and trapezoidal wire
  • Asymmetric: snap-ring wire and Z-section wire
  • Periodically varying: for example, automotive weatherstrip reinforcement wire

(3) By process

Hot-rolled wire and cold-drawn (cold-rolled) wire. Hot-rolled wire includes high-speed wire (high-line), ordinary wire and Cu/Al continuous-cast-continuous-rolled wire.

(4) By application

Shaped wire is used across a wide range of industries, both as wire in its own right and as components:

  • Spring and lock hardware
  • Electrical and communication parts
  • Medical devices (e.g., arch wires, guide wires)
  • Textile machinery (e.g., reeds, needles)
  • One-way clutches and bearing parts
  • Filters and environmental equipment (e.g., wedge wire screens)
  • Hand and pneumatic tool parts
  • Traffic equipment parts and piston rings
  • Eyewear parts
  • Handle trim strips
  • Watch straps
